The Lagos State Government in its bid to ease traffic recently demolished Alaba Rago Market in Ojo, a major hub for Nigerian traders.
The market specializes in cattle, grains, perishable food items, and general merchandise.
It was gathered that the Lagos State government through its agency visited the market in June for validation, and inspection.
The demolition took place between 17th -20th August, 2025
The demolition was rapid and it displaced thousands of traders, resulting in estimated losses of over N20 billion.
Many traders claimed they received no prior notice, and the exercise was carried out without following due process.
In another twist the government attributed the demolition to traffic congestion, insecurity, and environmental disorder.
However, traders argued that the government failed to provide alternative arrangements or compensation for their losses.
According to Report, One Mallam Nasir Muhammad, a 54 years old Ram Butcher lamented “how will I survive when the government razed down my business, I have been in this place since 2013 managing my business , Government should help me”.
In the same vein, Roseline Idah, a fellow trader complained bitterly, saying that the government gave them a little time frame and didn’t get them ready for the demolition
“The government only came in June for inspection we didn’t know the demolition will be so quick”.
However, a new ultramodern Alaba Rago Transnational Market is under construction, with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu breaking ground in November 2024.
The project promises over 5,000 shops, an event hall, banks, a hotel, and other facilities, to be completed within 24 months.
