Fresh violence has again, rocked Plateau State as gunmen suspected to be herders attacked 10 communities in Qua’an-Pan Local Government Area, displacing over 300 residents and burning down 30 houses.
The Director of Press and Publicity to the LGA Chairman, Danaan Cletus Sylvanus, confirmed the attacks in a statement released in Jos.
According to him, the affected communities include Nteng, Doop, Zhep Morop, Gyeergu, Kelaghan, Loon, Kwakii, and Gorom in Doemak District. The attacks occurred towards the end of August, just as farmers were preparing for harvest.
The gunmen also destroyed barns filled with harvested crops, worsening fears of looming food insecurity in the area.
LGA Chairman, Christopher Manship, condemned the attacks during a security meeting at Doemak, urging traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community groups to unite for a lasting solution.
“We are working tirelessly to restore peace and normalcy. Security agencies have been deployed to the affected areas, and displaced residents will be assisted to return home safely,” he assured.
Manship also called on local vigilante groups and community-based security outfits to stand firm in support of security agencies.
Meanwhile, the Acting President of Qua’an-Pan Traditional Council, Engr. Safiyanu Allahnanan, stressed that traditional rulers must play a critical role in rebuilding peace and trust among the affected communities.
