Sokoto State was thrown into mourning on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, after a boat carrying about 50 passengers overturned, leaving many feared dead.
According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), 25 passengers have so far been rescued, while another 25 remain unaccounted for. “No bodies have been recovered as of Tuesday morning,” the agency disclosed.
Officials said the vessel, which was conveying women, children, and motorcycles to Goronyo Market, a major hub for food produce in the region, overturned on Sunday.
Zubairu Yaro, Chairman of Goronyo Local Government, noted that rescue operations have been hampered by strong water currents from a nearby dam.
